Women often come in feeling overwhelmed with questions – Is everything okay? Am I having twins?
While these feelings of concern and confusion surrounding your pregnancy are completely natural, understanding your IVF HCG levels can provide peace of mind.
In this blog post, I’m going to take you through each step in the process and explain how single or twin IVF pregnancies can be determined by measuring HCG levels throughout the journey.

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG)
Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) is the major hormone in pregnancy, secreted by cells that form the placenta and it can be used to detect a pregnancy.
As an IVF patient, HCG will be closely monitored throughout your cycle as its levels increase rapidly when an embryo implants successfully into the uterus.
If you’re pregnant with twins, this doubling time can happen faster than if you’re having a singleton pregnancy.
When HCG levels are measured at 7-9 days post implantation, they should double every 48 – 72 hours in normal singleton pregnancies. However, if HCG levels rise too quickly or by more than 66% within this timeframe, it could be an indication of a twin pregnancy.

What HCG Levels You Should Expect During IVF Cycle?
During the first trimester, levels vary greatly between patients and it’s important to keep in mind that all pregnancies are different so what is normal for one woman may not be normal for another.
Your gynaecologist will take multiple HCG tests at various points throughout your IVF cycle to get a better understanding of how your pregnancy is progressing.
If they find that HCG levels are lower than expected, this could indicate complications such as ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage.
However, don’t panic! Ultrasounds often help confirm whether there is a viable pregnancy or not.
If you’re pregnant with twins, HCG levels will be much higher than a singleton pregnancy due to the two babies instead of one – so don’t be alarmed if your results come back higher than expected.
It can be scary and overwhelming when trying to understand what is happening with your baby, but it’s important to know that measuring your IVF HCG levels is an incredibly useful tool in helping your gynaecologist make sure everything is progressing as planned and there are no complications that may arise.
It can also provide peace of mind for those who are pregnant with twins as this indicates a healthy and viable pregnancy. Rest assured, you are in good hands!
If you have any further questions about IVF HCG levels and how they relate to single or twin pregnancies, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your gynecologist for more information and advice.
