What is semen?
“Before knowing about the semen analysis parameters, it is important to know what semen is. Semen is the thick, white fluid that contains sperm, and is released from the male reproductive organ upon ejaculation. Semen analysis is the process of evaluating the semen on various parameters. What are the parameters of semen analysis?
- Volume: “Couples who have been unsuccessful at achieving a natural pregnancy are advised to undergo some fertility evaluation tests. Semen analysis is one such test which is advised to the male partner. This test analyses the semen for its volume content. Ideal volume of semen needs to be more that 1.4 ml,” stated Dr. Garima Sharma, Consultant and Centre In-Charge of the best IVF center in Janakpuri – Gunjan IVF World.
- Colour: “The colour of semen is generally whitish or greyish. If it is yellowish or pinkish or slightly red in colour, there could be an underlying infection. - pH and acidic level: “Another important parameter to evaluate semen on is pH and acidic level. Anything in the level of 7.2-7.8 is considered to be absolutely normal. If the reports show lesser or more numbers, it means, you need to consult a specialist for treatment,” says Dr. Shubhda Gupta, gynecologist Noida and Consultant at Gunjan IVF World – a popular IVF clinic in Noida.
- Sperm count: “According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), ideal sperm count should be somewhere around 16mn/ml,” stated Dr. Dr. Anshu Dhar, Consultant at Gunjan IVF World, Indirapuram, Ghaziabad.
- Total motility: It refers to the percentage of sperm in the ejaculate that is actively moving. The total motility of semen needs to be more than 40%.
- Progressive motility: Refers to sperm that move is a straight line or large circles. Sperm with progressive motility are able to move at least 25 micrometers per second. Progressive motility should be more than 30%.
- Morphology: Semen morphology refers to the shape, appearance, and anatomy of sperm cells. It should be more than 4%.
Over and above these, semen analysis also checks samples for pus cell or agglutination which means any clumping of particles like bacteria or red blood cells.
