On the request of our readers, we bring to you another easy breezy article on what all foods to avoid when going through IVF treatment. Read this article to know what they are.

What food to avoid eating during IVF treatment?

“During IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) treatment, nutrition plays a supportive role in enhancing fertility and increasing the chances of success. While there’s no one-size-fits-all diet, avoiding certain foods can help support hormonal balance, egg quality, and implantation,” says Dr. Gunjan Gupta, renowned gynaecologist Ghaziabad and Medical Director & Founder of Gunjan IVF World – the best IVF center in Ghaziabad. Gunjan IVF World has three other highly advanced IVF clinics at Janakpuri, Noida and Meerut and has been the third time winner of North India’s best IVF clinic chain by Economic Times.

Here’s a list of foods that most doctors generally recommend to avoid during IVF treatment:

  • High Mercury Fish: “If you are a non-vegetarian and consume fish, please avoid the ones that are rich in mercury. Mercury can affect fetal development and hormone levels. Rather consume the ones that are low on mercury and high on omega-3,” said Dr. Gupta.
  • Processed Foods and Trans Fats: “Processed foods that are often high in trans fats, sugars, and additives can cause inflammation or hormone imbalance. So, stay away from packaged snacks, frozen meals, chips, candy, soda, etc. if you are undergoing IVF treatment. Trans fats are linked to ovulatory infertility and inflammation. Therefore, avoid eating margarine, baked goods made with hydrogenated oils, and some fast food,” recommends Dr. Garima Sharma, Consultant & Centre In-Charge of Gunjan IVF World – a leading IVF clinic in Janakpuri.
  • Excess Sugar & Refined Carbs: Consuming foods with excess sugar can spike insulin, affect hormone levels, and reduce egg quality. So, stay away from white bread, pastries, sugary drinks, breakfast cereals with added sugar.
  • Excessive Consumption of Caffeine: “High intake of coffee has been linked to lower IVF success rates in some studies. So, be aware. Limit your daily consumption to ideally : 200 mg/day (about 1–2 small cups of coffee),” said Dr. Shivansh Jaiswal, gynecologist Noida and Consultant at Gunjan IVF World – a well-known IVF centre in Noida.
  • Alcohol Intake: Drinking alcohol may disrupt hormone levels, embryo development, and reduce implantation success. So, avoid it completely during IVF and pregnancy.
