If you and your partner have been trying to conceive for a long time and are unsuccessful every time, you might think of resorting to the IVF process. However, if you have a low AMH problem, there might arise a question. It is: Can IVF work when you have low AMH or not? But before answering this question, you will have to understand what is low AMH and how IVF works completely? It will help you make the right decision for yourself.

What is low AMH?

AMH or Anti-Mullerian Hormone is a hormone that keeps on depleting as the woman crosses the age of 40. However, you will face no problem if your AMH level is above 21.98 pmol/l. Although, it can also depend on age and other circumstances. Moreover, the doctors determine the AMH level by looking at the number of developing follicles in your ovaries.

Overall speaking, age is not always the reason behind low AMH. There are conditions where women who have crossed the 40s still have high AMH. Simultaneously, other women who are in their 20s and 30s have declining AMH levels. So, this can be a result of other factors like cancer treatment and inherited genetic causes. And to avoid this, it is better to know the age of menopause in your family and take action accordingly.

How does IVF work?

IVF means In-Vitro fertilization. It is a type of assisted reproductive technology in which fertilization takes place in the lab. In the process, first, the mother is given medications to increase egg production, followed by maturing them. Eventually, the doctor extracts these eggs to mix them with pre-collected sperm from the male partner. After fertilization, resulted embryos are transferred into the woman’s uterus for her to conceive.

To carry out IVF, you have to go through multiple steps. And this process can take a time of several months. Some couples may get pregnant on their first try. But others need more than one IVF cycle to get pregnant.IVF is a beneficial way to become pregnant even if you are going through a fertility problem.

AMH and IVF

Many doctors do not recommend fertility treatment using the patient’s egg if the woman is experiencing low AMH. It mostly happens when the AMH has fallen below the universal cut-off level. However, the probability of whether you will successfully become pregnant through in-vitro fertilization largely depends on the condition of women’s ovarian reserve. It determines how well the woman can produce a large quantity of high-performing eggs in a cycle.

When a woman has low AMH or abnormally high FSH levels, it denotes a compromised ability to produce high-quality eggs. It means there is a relatively low probability of success with IVF and a poor fertility prognosis. The low level of the anti-mullerian hormone usually indicates that the AMH level is below 1.05 ng/mL. Thus, it means there is a low chance of becoming pregnant, and many IVF centers deny treatment to women with such a low AMH level.

However, recently in the journal of Human Reproduction, CHR said that women suffering from an undetectable low level of AMH, i.e., below 0.16 ng/mL, can also conceive. They can also become pregnant successfully if they take proper prevention and well-designed ovarian stimulation protocols.

There is no such medical treatment of low AMH. However, if you develop a healthy lifestyle, take proper vitamins and supplements, you can improve your chance of becoming pregnant. Some of these changes include:

  • Lifestyle changes: To improve the level of AMH in your body, you need to improve your diet by including nutritious food items. Moreover, choose food that is high in protein and low in calories. Your diet should have the proper balance of fruits and vegetables. Also, ensure that you are doing at least 40 minutes of daily workout. Relaxation programs like pranayama and yoga can also help to cure the situation. Remember, you must avoid alcohol and smoking at any cost.
  • Vitamins and supplements: For increasing the level of AMH in your body, the doctor may recommend Vitamin-D, folic acid, coEnzymes Q10, and fish oil supplements. Moreover, testosterone and DHEA supplementation may also increase your chance of getting pregnant.

These options are very effective in increasing the probability of women getting pregnant. Doctors recommend this when you plan to go through treatments like IUI (intro-uterine insemination), IVF (In-vitro fertilization), Surrogacy, donor eggs, etc.

Conclusion

So if you have low AMH and want to get pregnant through the IVF option, it is best to follow these options. However, to evaluate the problem, the doctor may also include the ovaries’ ultrasound to count the number of follicles and co-relate it to the AMH levels. In older-aged women, the chances of pregnancy are usually not more than 10 percent, whereas, in younger women, it can get up to 30 percent.
