Why is nutrition important during adolescence

It has been established that healthy diet and fertility are connected. Women who eat less fruit & veggies and consume more fast food take longer to get pregnant and are less likely to conceive fast, according to a study published in one of the world’s leading reproductive medicine journal.

When the researchers looked at the impact of diet on infertility, they found that in women with the lowest intake of fruit, the risk of infertility increased from 8% to 12%, and in those who ate fast food four or more times a week, the risk of infertility increased from 8% to 16%. These findings show that eating a good quality diet that includes fruit and minimising fast food consumption improves fertility and reduces the time it takes to get pregnant.

According to the research team of the best IVF clinic Delhi, Gunjan IVF World: Harvard Medical School also published a review of past studies that examined the impact of diet on fertility. Here’s what they found.

For women trying to become pregnant naturally (without ‘assistive reproductive technologies’ such as in vitro fertilization), the following vitamins and nutrients were linked to positive effects on fertility:

  • folic acid
  • vitamin B12
  • omega-3 fatty acids
  • healthy diets (such as the Mediterranean diet)

“Trans fat and ‘unhealthy diets’ (those rich in red and processed meats, potatoes, sweets, and sweetened beverages” were found to have negative effects on fertility”, says Dr. Garima Sharma, IVF Specialist Gunjan IVF Janakpuri – as a sum up of various scientific journals.

Studies in men have also found that semen quality improves with healthy diets (as described above), while the opposite has been linked with diets high in saturated or trans fat. Alcohol and smoking appeared to have effect, obviously the worst kind.

Now let’s talk about what is this ‘good diet pattern’. Dr. Garima, who consults nearly 15 to 20 couples daily at the best IVF clinic Delhi says, “certain foods and the right quantities of them can enhance your fertility and improve your chances of getting pregnant. These are:

  • Natural plant-based diets like salads and soups
  • Enough fibre, in fact millets are absolutely great
  • Healthy fats like desi ghee, nuts, dry fruits etc
  • Whole grains and pulses
  • Adequate water intake
  • Eggs & chicken if you are a non-vegetarian
  • And superfoods like green veggies that include broccoli,
    fenugreek (methi) and spinach (palak)

As a leading IVF clinic in Delhi, we always recommend to everyone that they should choose foods which are a good source of protein, vitamins and minerals as well as rich in folic acid and vitamin C to help improve the ovulation process in women. Garlic has been found to be a fertility boosting food too.

So, when trying to get pregnant, what you eat as a couple matters.

Gunjan IVF World started as a trusted IVF center in Ghaziabad and soon spread its clinics to locations like Janakpuri, Meerut and Noida.
