How much sperm is used in iui

Read this interesting article by IVF experts of the best IVF clinic in Ghaziabad – Gunjan IVF World about IUI process and how much sperm is required.

Male infertility cases are on the rise globally. And in most of these cases men are totally unaware of this medical condition. As a result of which many are unable to become fathers. Thankfully with advancements in the world of science, men with fertility issues can become fathers through IVF. Read this interesting blog by IVF experts of Gunjan IVF World – a well-known IVF centre in Delhi about Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) and how it can help.

Understanding Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) Treatment

“IUI or intrauterine insemination is a popular and first in line treatment that is suggested to couples who are planning to go ahead with IVF treatment. Most patients that we see often ask me a question that how much sperm is needed for IUI. I always tell them that before knowing that, it is important for them to understand what is IUI and how is it done. This is a simple IVF procedure which involves the placing of washed and concentrated sperm into a woman’s uterus during the time of her ovulation. This treatment procedure is suggested to couples with mild male infertility or cervical factor infertility,” said Dr. Gunjan Gupta, well-known gynaecologist Ghaziabad and Founder & Medical Director, Gunjan IVF World – the best IVF clinic in Ghaziabad. Gunjan IVF World has been awarded as North India’s best IVF clinic chain two times in a row by Economic Times and has four highly advanced centres at Indirapuram, Janakpuri, Noida and Meerut.

“IUI is a basic non-invasive procedure wherein a woman is prepped up for the procedure. A woman’s ovulation cycle is monitored through ultrasound and hormone tests to know about the best time for insemination,” stated Dr. Shubhda Gupta, gynecologist Noida and Consultant at the most-talked about IVF center in Noida – Gunjan IVF World.

“Sperm is retrieved from the male partner, washed and prepared for insemination. Sperm washing is an essential part of this procedure because it ensures healthy and motile sperm get separated from seminal fluid and other components which might lead to adverse reactions in the uterus,” advised Dr. Aastha Raheja, Consultant at a leading IVF clinic in Indirapuram – Gunjan IVF World.

“The washed sperm is then inserted into the uterus of the female partner using a thin catheter by an IVF expert. The procedure is non-invasive, takes few minutes and is painless,” mentioned Dr. Anshu Dhar, Consultant at Gunjan IVF World – the best IVF center in Ghaziabad.

How much sperm is used for IUI?

“There is no specific number of sperm that is necessary for IUI. It varies generally but what IVF experts look out for is a certain threshold to maximise the possibilities of conception. A minimum of 5-10 million motile sperm post washing is best-suited for IUI. Research shows that there have been higher rates of success in cases where there have been at least 10 million motile sperm,” said Dr. Garima Sharma, Center In-Charge and Consultant at Gunjan IVF World, the best IVF clinic in Janakpuri.

“Pregnancy possibilities decrease with lower sperm count. For example, semen samples containing less than 1 million motile sperm have significantly lesser changes of successful conception. On the contrary, samples with more that 20 million motile sperm do not increase success rates but can lead to multiple pregnancies. So, optimal sperm count for IUI is 5-10 million motile sperm post wash,” concluded Dr. Gunjan Gupta.
