Is bleeding during an IVF pregnancy normal

Bleeding during IVF Pregnancy

Bleeding during pregnancy can be scary but bleeding during IVF pregnancy becomes particularly scarier. For the couples, who have been trying for a baby for years, a slight sign of trouble can make them anxious. But bleeding during IVF pregnancy is not always a reason worth panicking. Why? Leading gynaecologists from Gunjan IVF World – the best IVF centre in Delhi, tell us why.

“Bleeding or spotting is considered to be extremely common during pregnancy. What is surprising to know is that nearly 10% of pregnant women are often faced with some sort of vaginal bleeding during pregnancy. In IVF, the number increases to 25%, the first trimester being the most common time for it. The bleeding is mostly self-limited and harmless; they stop by themselves within a few days. But for obvious reasons, IVF patients tend to fear the worst; some immediately start worrying about a possible miscarriage,” says Dr. Gunjan Gupta, leading IVF specialist Ghaziabad, and Founder & Director of Gunjan IVF World – the best IVF center in Ghaziabad.

Bleeding after Embryo Transfer

“The bleeding that happens after an embryo transfer comes from the mother. The embryo is literally a cell at this point, without any blood. So, bleeding doesn’t mean miscarriage,” adds Dr. Aastha Raheja, Consultant at Gunjan IVF World – leading IVF clinic in Ghaziabad.

What causes bleeding in IVF pregnancy ?

Here are some of the most common reasons that can cause bleeding during an IVF pregnancy:

  • Implantation blood: “The implantation of the embryo into the uterine lining happens around 6-10 days following the transfer. A placenta implants itself first into the uterine lining in order to connect to the mothers blood supply. So, the placenta explants and blood vessels rupture to cause bleeding. It is harmless, generally lasts a few days,” explains Dr. Garima Sharma, Consultant & Centre In-Charge at Gunjan IVF World – the best IVF center in Janakpuri, New Delhi.
  • Subchorionic haemorrhage: When the placenta detaches itself from the uterus in a very small way, blood seems to be collecting between the placenta and the uterus.
  • Polyps: Cervical and endometrial polyps are harmless growths that can be seen very frequently in women’s reproductive system. Due to hormonal changes during IVF, these polyps can grow and bleed.
  • Vaginal/Cervical irritation: This can happen due to frequent vaginal examination, sexual intercourse, etc.

When is it not normal?

“It is important for you to know that there is no need to be worried if the bleeding is light, has a reddish or brownish colour. This will disappear all by itself. But in case of severe pain, nausea, vomiting, one should definitely seek medical help immediately. These symptoms can indicate a decrease of hormone level, which can be cured with medications. For very rare cases, it can be an ectopic pregnancy where the embryo has been implanted outside the uterus. An ultrasound can make sure of the exact problem,” says Dr. Shubhda Gupta, Consultant at Gunjan IVF World – the best IVF centre in Noida.

Conclusion

Dr. Anshu Dhar, Consultant at Gunjan IVF World – the best IVF centre in Indirapuram, Ghaziabad, concluded saying, “During the dreadful wait between embryo transfer and positive pregnancy test result, the simplest of things can make one assume the worst. Sadly, most of the time it’s not even possible to identify where the blood came from! But, what we can assure you is that it is absolutely okay to bleed a little during your pregnancy. And, for any risk of misfortune, we are there for you with our best care.”
