ivf pregnancy vs normal preganancy

Read this insightful blog by Gunjan IVF World – the best IVF centre in Ghaziabad, to know how IVF pregnancies are different from normal pregnancies

The journey of becoming parents is different and special for every couple. And in this journey, some have to decide beyond the natural way of conception and opt for assisted reproductive technologies or ART. Couples, who find it difficult to get pregnant naturally for years, find their hope in assisted reproductive technologies or ART. IVF has been successfully fulfilling a lot of parenthood dreams. But still there are certain myths surrounding the process of IVF.

IVF Preganancy Vs Normal Preganancy

IVF pregnancy is only unique when it comes to the process of fertilisation. While in a normal pregnancy, the egg fertilises with sperm inside the woman’s body after a couple has an intercourse, in IVF this process takes place in-vitro, i.e. in a petri dish under controlled environment of a laboratory. But once the embryo is placed inside the uterus, the pattern from there is similar to a natural conception,” explains Dr. Gunjan Gupta, leading IVF specialist Ghaziabad. “Another difference is the monitoring an IVF patient gets from the IVF clinic. The first few weeks of IVF pregnancy requires more intensive monitoring and care than a normal pregnancy, to make sure the process is running smoothly,” she added. Dr. Gunjan Gupta is the Founder & Director of Gunjan IVF World – top IVF clinic in Ghaziabad, with three other highly advanced clinics in Janakpuri, Meerut and Noida.

IVF Pregnancy Week by Week

IVF experts from Gunjan IVF World – the best IVF centre in Delhi, pen down IVF pregnancy journey week-by-week:

First two weeks

“Being aware of what needs to be done and how to go through it is extremely important. In natural conception, couples mostly don’t even find out that they’re pregnant for one or two months. But, for those who undergo IVF treatment, they become aware of it nearly two weeks after the embryo has been transferred. And they become prone to anxiety, and can become overly sensitive to morning sickness,” says Dr. Garima Sharma, Centre In-Charge & Consultant at Gunjan IVF World – the best IVF clinic in Janakpuri, New Delhi.

  • Early pregnancy and premenstrual symptoms: Medication prescribed for ovarian stimulation can cause an early pregnancy and premenstrual symptoms. This makes the two weeks of wait, between embryo transfer and confirmation of pregnancy, more stressful and confusing. Mood swings, bloating, nausea, spotting, etc. can make you feel overwhelmed. It is important to remember that these symptoms are normal for IVF pregnancy. It won’t harm you or your baby in any way.
  • Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS): “In this, the ovaries might swell and lead to cramps, nausea and bloating. This can happen in IVF pregnancies because of the hormonal medications. Normally the symptoms are mild and go away by themselves. If a person suffers OHSS while pregnant, the symptoms may linger for 2 to 4 weeks following a positive pregnancy test. OHSS is not proven to have any long-term risk on the baby or your pregnancy. In case of severe pain, seek your doctor’s help,” advises Dr. Shubhda Gupta, Consultant of the best IVF centre in Noida – Gunjan IVF World.

2 to 10 weeks

“The fertility clinic provides the mother with intensive care following a positive pregnancy test result. There are a few risks related to IVF pregnancies, and with constant care these risks can be reduced. These include chances of miscarriage, high blood pressure, pre-eclampsia, diabetes, etc. An IVF patient may be asked to visit the clinic for ultrasounds every one or two weeks. This care is only to make sure your pregnancy goes risk-free and smooth,” explains Dr. Aastha Raheja, Consultant at Gunjan IVF World – the best IVF centre in Indirapuram, Ghaziabad.

10 weeks and beyond

After 10 weeks, if there are no complications, an IVF pregnancy will be as “normal” as a natural pregnancy. The difference between both becomes negligible from this point. “At Gunjan IVF World, we make sure the mother is cared for till the time she delivers the baby. This care includes prenatal check-up, patient’s diet and supplements, medical support like progesterone, etc.” says Dr. Anshu Dhar, Consultant at Gunjan IVF World – leading IVF center in Ghaziabad.

Conclusion

So there is nothing to worry about an IVF pregnancy in particular, for it is no different than a normal pregnancy in terms of the result. Just celebrate the journey you’ve already made, take care of yourself and enjoy your pregnancy!
