Read this interesting blog by IVF experts of the best IVF clinic in Ghaziabad – Gunjan IVF World about a very commonly asked question.
Infertility is not just a woman’s problem alone. Men too, are equally responsible. In most cases, men do not even think of getting a fertility assessment done until they find it difficult to father a child. Low sperm count, low sperm motility are the most common causes of male fertility problems. IVF experts of the best IVF centre in Delhi – Gunjan IVF World share an interesting article on how men with low sperm count and motility can become fathers post treatment.
What leads to low sperm count in men?
“Low sperm count or oligospermia is a male infertility condition in which there are less than 15 million sperm in 1 ml of semen. This could be the result of congenital issues, injury of the testicles, lifestyle choices, childhood infections, chromosome or hormonal problems, varicoceles, or long-term use of medications. Men suffering from sexually transmitted diseases like Gonorrhea and chlamydia also have low sperm count. Hyperthyroidism, obesity and diabetes are also contributing factors to low sperm count. Environmental toxins and cancer treatment can also come in the way of sperm count,” stated Dr. Gunjan Gupta, gynaecologist Ghaziabad and Medical Director & Founder of Gunjan IVF World – the best IVF clinic in Ghaziabad. Gunjan IVF World has four highly advanced IVF clinics at Ghaziabad, Janakpuri, Meerut and Noida and has been awarded North India’s best IVF clinic chain twice by Economic Times.
What is sperm motility?
“Sperm motility refers to the ability of the sperm to move or swim efficiently. This is extremely important for fertilization because the sperm has to travel through the uterus and the fallopian tubes to meet the egg. In low sperm motility cases, the sperm is unable to complete this journey. As a result of which there is lesser chances of conception,” said Dr. Garima Sharma, Center In-Charge and Consultant at the leading IVF clinic in Janakpuri – Gunjan IVF World.
My husband has low sperm count and motility, can I get pregnant?
“One of the most common queries that most couples we see have is – My husband has low sperm count and motility, can I get pregnant? The answer to that is yes, pregnancy is possible. With the right treatment approach, lifestyle modifications, pregnancy can be achieved,” said Dr. Aastha Raheja, Consultant at the best IVF clinic in Indirapuram, Ghaziabad – Gunjan IVF World.
Sperm count can be easily diagnosed through a semen analysis test which provides information about every aspect of the sperm – count, quality and morphology. Blood tests can also be done to check hormone levels including testosterone, FSH, LH and prolactin.
“At Gunjan IVF World, we have good success rate in treating couples with low sperm count issues. In fact, we have a good track record of achieving successful pregnancies in low sperm count cases. Certain lifestyle modifications and medications have always been our first in-line treatment in low sperm count cases. Surgeries like TESE/Micro-TESE are also done based on the patient’s condition,” said Dr. Gunjan Gupta.
Treatments available
“Simple lifestyle modifications like eating healthy and nutritious food, regular exercises, quitting smoking & alcohol consumption, avoiding hot baths & tight- fitting underwear, etc. can have a positive impact on the sperm count and motility,” recommended Dr. Megha Solanki, Consultant at a well-known IVF center in Janakpuri – Gunjan IVF World.
“Surgical interventions like varicocelectomy, microsurgical vasovasostomy, vasoepididymostomy or transurethral resection can be advised by your fertility expert depending on the condition of the patient,” added Dr. Aastha Raheja.
Assisted reproductive techniques that help in achieving pregnancy in cases where sperm count and motility is low include:
IUI: “The first in-line treatment and the most advised in low sperm count cases. In this, healthy and motile sperm are washed and prepared and then inserted into the uterus using a tiny catheter. This improves the chances of fertilization as the sperm can reach the fallopian tube and egg faster,” added Dr. Garima Sharma.
IVF: In-vitro Fertilisation is also another procedure that is usually suggested by IVF experts wherein the sperm and egg are collected from the couple and fertilized in a lab. The embryo formed from the fertilization is then transferred to the uterus for implantation.
IVF and ICSI: Another IVF treatment method that is advised by IVF experts. In this sperm is extracted from the male partner through procedures like Testicular Sperm Extraction (TESE) or Micro-TESE. The extracted sperm is then washed and prepared and then fertilized with the egg retrieved from the female partner. The embryo formed from fertilization is then inserted into the uterus for implantation.
