Introduction
IVF is a popular infertility treatment that is helping thousands of couples conceive. However, many couples have a misconception that IVF is a costly procedure and they can’t afford it.
To understand the general cost of IVF, it is essential to know about IVF’s meaning and some related basics.
This blog covers how the IVF cost is distributed and depends upon various factors. However, if you wish to know this information in a video form, watch our youtube video here.
What is IVF?
IVF, which stands for in vitro fertilisation, is an advanced reproductive technique to fertilise eggs and sperm in the lab. Whereas, normal fertilisation takes place in a woman’s body, fertilisation in IVF takes place in the lab.
The basic IVF process starts from day two or day three of your period. It starts with ovarian stimulation, where we give certain injections and medications to increase egg production. It is done for 10 to 12 days. However, if a donor is involved, these injections are given to her.
Next, a trigger injection is given for egg maturity. Under anaesthesia, these mature eggs are extracted and fertilised with sperms. The sperm used here is of your partner or donor if he is involved in the process.
Once embryo is formed its grown up to the blastocyst stage(5-6 days)in the lab at this stage they are transferred to the woman’s uterus. Some medications are given to support the pregnancy in the womb.
After 14 days, you can take a pregnancy test to confirm whether result is successful or not.

Cost Distribution
If we talk about IVF procedural cost, it may vary center to center and range between Rs. 35,000 to Rs. 50,000. It involves extracting oocytes, putting them into the media, fertilising them with sperm, growing embryos, embryo transfer etc.
The main cost here involves the cost of IVF injections that are used for egg development. These injections vary depending on the type of injection usage. However, the average cost of IVF injections ranges between Rs. 70,000 to Rs. 90,000.
In conclusion, the major IVF cost gets divided into two segments: Procedural cost and IVF injection. However, an IVF process also includes the cost of:
- Multiple Consultations
- Ultrasounds
- Egg Pickup media
- Anaesthesia
- Lab maintenance
After all these things are included, the average cost of IVF in India ranges between Rs. 1,25,000 to Rs. 1,50,000.
However, this cost can vary if there are any additional procedures are required in some special cases. Let’s learn about what are some of these.

Additional Procedures
In some circumstances, additional medications or injections may be required. In addition, for certain couples, reproductive experts may recommend additional tests.
-
- Blastocyst Transfer
A blastocyst is an embryo that has grown up to 5 days in the lab. It is a special procedure where a blastocyst is transferred to a uterus instead of day2/3(cleavage stage embryo). It requires special media, gases and incubators, which adds to the IVF cost.
Furthermore, sometimes these embryos are not transferred in the same cycle because of different reasons. In this case, we choose to freeze embryos and go for a later IVF circle.
- Frozen Embryos
Women with the polycystic ovarian syndrome have multiple follicles as a result during IVF stimulation multiple eggs are recruited which increases the chances of ovarian hyper-stimulation syndrome(OHSS) in these women.
Doctors may advise you to not do the embryo transfer in the same cycle of egg retrieval but to freeze the embryos and transfer in the next cycle. This method gives you a significantly better chance of becoming pregnant. Hence, this involves a freezing cost that affects the final amount.
Freezing may be required in some other conditions also like if your hormonal levels are not appropriate for embryo transfer or your endometrial thickness is not good for transfer.
- Hatching with a laser
It becomes more difficult for a woman to become pregnant once she reaches the age of 35. Only 15% of women beyond the age of 40 can conceive.
In these cases, the outer layer of oocytes is hard, and we recommend hatching with a laser. Laser hatching has shown that women with increased age have a better chance of becoming pregnant.
- Embryo genetic testing
Doctors may advise some couples to have an embryo genetic test to boost their pregnancy chances if they or someone in their family have a genetic problem.
Conclusion
The IVF cost depends upon various factors. The best part after spending 1 lakh or 2 is the final result. When you hold your baby in your hands for the first time, everything seems worth it.
