Does Low AMH really have any signs or symptoms?
In general, Low AMH is an asymptomatic condition.
This means almost every patient is unaware that they suffer from low AMH levels.
When a girl child is born, she has a fixed number of eggs in the form of follicles. This number stands around a million.
These numbers gradually deplete as a child grows. Once she reaches the age of puberty, the eggs have depleted to mere lacs (approx 4 lac).
After puberty, approximately 10 eggs are designated for development in the ovary. Out of these 10 eggs, just 1 egg ovulates, and the others are destroyed.
The ovulated one is fertilized for the pregnancy or shredded by the body at the end of the menstrual cycle.

Now if you have low AMH levels, it means that your egg reserves are depleting fast.
The remaining eggs are few, and hence your fertility decreases. That’s the root cause of the problem with low AMH levels.
In most cases, patients approach doctors only after trying to conceive for two to three years.
When we test these patients, almost 25% of them have low AMH levels, which is significant. So talking about symptoms of low AMH, the only sign is infertility.
Apart from these, a few female patients might notice a change in the pattern of their period.
E.g.
The flow during the period decreases gradually. It starts decreasing from 5 days up to 2 days.
This gradual decrease might be an indication that your AMH level is low.
But it is important to remember not all women with less flow during the period suffer from low AMH value. It might be some other condition.
Some patients with low AMH experience an early or premature period,
i.e.
If their cycle was 28 days, the next month, the period will come 2 to 3 days early.
Again these are the subtle signs, and the patient with these issues might not have low AMH. But those with low AMH generally experience these issues.
In some rare cases, there is an occurrence of total ovarian failure.
Here, the AMH drops so low that the patient becomes Amenorrheic. This means the patient doesn’t get a period at all, or the period comes after 2 to 3 months.
Some patients might experience Hot Flashes and Sweating. But these symptoms are visible only when the AMH is extremely low, i.e. below 0.1 ng/ml.
